Sandpoint Area ~ Map of Area ' Area Attractions
On the northern shores of Lake Pend Oreille (Click here to view Good Morning America video), Idaho’s largest and deepest lake, sits a town of 8000. Just 11 miles and 2500 feet above the town is Schweitzer Mountain Ski Resort, a 3000 acre paradise considered the best ski resort in the Northwest where fresh tracks can still be found days after a storm. From the top of Schweitzer one can view the mountains of Montana, Idaho, Washington, and British Columbia.
Surrounded by natural beauty, Sandpoint is nestled at the northern tip of Lake Pend Oreille between the Selkirk and Cabinet mountains in the middle of the Idaho Panhandle. Sandpoint is home to a thriving arts community and vibrant downtown, with activities and special events planned all year long. The winter climate here in the frontal ranges of the Rocky Mountains is milder than is found to the east. Summers tend to be dry and clear, with pleasant temperatures and a lack of humidity.
Elevated at about 2,000 feet, Sandpoint is located 80 miles northeast of Spokane, Washington 50 miles from Canada, and a 6-hour drive east of Seattle. About 7,500 people live in Sandpoint and a total of 36,000 live in the Bonner County. Lake Pend Oreille is the largest lake in Idaho, measuring 43 miles long with a maximum of 1,100 feet deep. The town is surrounded by the Kaniksu National Forest.
